A quick update on how things are running with my games:

Broken history -

Rundown of current players on each faction (players who may or may not participate are in brackets)
Leontrois: Ben, Dave
Saxathia: Liam, Matt M
Hellios: Mav, Will, (George)
Drakon: Matt L, (Pedro, Ryan)

Province ownership will soon be decided.

Darker skies -

After weeks of development 3.2 is almost ready to be released! A universal restart is required unfortunately but the new improvements and overhauls to large parts of the game this is the most comprehensive patch since 2.5.
Co-conspiritor Will Bennett is behind some of the most interesting new additions including many of the planet-side vehicles that have been added in the new patch.
Here is an overview of the new additions and edits(that I can remember):

  • Penalties for Overuse/failing to cast magic have now been officially defined
  • Ammunition has been added properly into the system (despite it being used since 2.7)
  • The to hit system has changed slightly, weapon accuracy is now out of 5 rather than 10 meaning that it will be easier to hit fast craft, this was also done to match up to the planet-side vehicle hit system.
  • Planet-side vehicles(Walkers, Crawlers and Flyers), equipment and upgrades have been added and costed.
  • Additional weapons have been added for increased character diversity, new spears and shotguns.
  • Athlete class has been replaced with the new 'Adventurer' class (retaining the same class advantage and disadvantages).
  • Class levelled abilities have been added to the system (based on the scribblings I made for the lost 2.9 rule-set)
  • The cost of some weapons has changed - Pulse rifle was 3650 and is now 3600, Lightning Glaive was 3600 and is now 3550 and the Sniper rifle was 3550 and is now 3500
  • The Phaze claw effect has been properly defined (it was implied and roleplayed before but never specified in the rule-set) - On hit, roll d6, on the roll of a 4+ half your target’s speed(rounded up) next turn.
  • Faction descriptions have been changed and increased in depth, a new faction has been added 'The Foxnet Syndicate'
  • The 'Turn into a captain' option on each race has been removed and a new section has been added called 'Retainers' which essentially replaces the captain upgrade with a more detailed and useful option.
  • The BHI table has been updated to reflect the ships added in 3.0
  • The shield and hull mechanics have been explained, the Hull mechanic was overhauled
  • New shield and hull types have been added
  • Vim abilities will be displayed (they were previously missing from the rule-set.)
  • The rule-set has had a massive layout and formatting change to make it easier for the players and GMs alike.

Aya's Chosen: Honour's End (Working title) -

Development schedule has been decided release of the ruleset is due for March 2013 this date may change depending on how the development goes and the weather when I need to playtest the system.
Each clan and house has been given a toke colour, players must represent this in their clothing, hair and now in their warpaint:

A new land to discover!

Development has started on a new LARP!

Name is yet to be decided, but here are a few of the possibilities

  • War of the 5
  • Tales of Avayandria
  • The Shadow Era: Fall of Aya
  • Crown of Kings: Battle for Avayandria
  • Crown of Chains
  • Last of the Chevaak
  • Honour's demise
  • The Death of Chivalry: The Siege of Jur'Uketh
  • Aya's Chosen: Exodus
The new LARP is set in a fantasy land known as Avayandria (in the native tongue it means 'Homeland of those faithful to Aya)

Map of Avayandria:

There is only one playable race, humans.
there are 8 'factions' to join which determines what your capabilities are and how much gold you start with.

The Houses of Avayandria:

House of Serin:

The Current royal family and descendants of the first Avayandrian King Mithras, these northerners worship the element of light, and are the chief defenders of the goddess Aya. Faith and courage is their defence, Aya favours the brave. Members of the House of Serin are the best Paladins and Priests of all Avayandria. The Serin family have a lot to live up to, and a lot of pressure on them to deliver the Avayandrian people to victory, once the richest family in the known world the House of Serin now stand close to bankruptcy, much of their gold, prominent family members and halls lost to the barbarian invaders.

House of Yal'Kirath:

Descendants of the first Chevtaaki King, Chev'Kirath, the most ruthless and unforgiving of all the great houses in Avayandria, the house of Yal'Kirath worship the destructive force of Fire. Ambitious and begrudging the members of this house often raid and destroy foreign villages, rival's villages, neutral villages, travelling caravans and Inns that don't give the House of Yal'Kirath a discount. Yet when Avayandria needs them they are the first to answer the call to war, bloodthirsty and keen to impress the House of Yal'kirath are excellent Sorcerors and Berserkers.

House of Tyorak:

Descendants of the kings of D'landria the House of Tyorak ride from the east of Avayandria, on the eastern winds they fly, skilled archers and corsairs the House of Tyorak revere the wind above all else and despite their generally rough appearance, they , troublesome but loyal the House of Tyorak are ones to watch.

House of Potenit:

Descendants of the kings of Potenia and Palitonia the house of Potenit revere the element of earth and trust in the strength of a shield or fortress wall, they were the last defenders of Jur'Uketh in the Swords Era when the D'landrians besieged the great city. They are the best Vindicators and Warriors in the land.

House of Bulgruum:

The house of Bulgruum are descendants of the kings of Forizar, the southern deserts and coastline, they worship the element of water, source of all life. The House of Bulgruum are keen sailors and excellent swimmers. The house of Bulgruum are the best merchants and are keen political activists, pushing for their own ideas to be heard by the king making them the best Magistrates.

Barbarian clans:

Voltraag:

Charging across the eastern border these barbarians love nothing more than to slay their enemies face to face, they make excellent Warriors and Berserkers.

Yrrhinic:

Yrrhinics are the western clans that charge through Tol'Nodar towards the capital, so far the most successful of the invaders the Yrrhinics are well versed in the ways of magic and stalwart defence, the Yrrhinics are the most civilised of the invaders. They make the excellent Sorcerers and Vindicators.

Halorrf:

Halorrfs are the sea peoples who raid and sometimes trade from the south, using their well built ships to out manoeuvre the Avayandrian navy they evade the army and strike the common man, well known to be excellent Corsairs and shrewd Brokers.

The classes are what determine your stats, further details of classes and abilities will be posted in the next few weeks including information on 'specialisation' benefits, and weapon specific skills/effects

New tool added

Added a new tool to the broken history page on the website, Character Gen tool!

Choose a faction and click the button, your starting wealth, claim to the throne character effects and standing in society will be listed before you don't like the result? Reset and try again!

The tool generates a character out of the following 6 social classes present in Broken History:

  • Peasant - lowest class, poor.
  • Bourgeois - peasant but rich.
  • Minor Noble - Low ranking noble, poorer than the other nobles.
  • Prominent Noble - Rich noble.
  • Ancient Royal Line - Once this family ruled the land, now they have lost it, but remain within nobility carefully watching for signs of weakness in the monarchy.
  • Current Royal Family - A member of the Monarch's close family and highest ranking nobles in the land, rich, influencial and not to be trifled with.

This tool is intended to help you do two things:

  1. Get a grips on the different character starting types, including available funds advantages and disadvantages.
  2. When the official campaign starts each player will roll their character using this tool or via dice roll (Tool is the preferred option)

Darker skies 3.0 rules to be released to players

Darker skies 3.0 has (hopefully) been almost repaired and is nearly ready to be shipped out to y'all in a fortnight's time.
I'll post a change-log on the day of the release.

New template for Kiron Games website

I've just about finished the new template for the Kiron Games website, not sure whether I'll use it yet.
It's a lot lighter, cleaner I feel that it looks a bit more professional but I do use a lot of CSS3/html5 in there so IE users, be warned it won't look as good.
If you guys want to have a look at it then feel free:

A little about me, and the games I've designed

Hi, I'm Maverick, but my real name is Tom.
I design and create games, not computer games(yet), games that can be played either on your dining room table or out in the fields.
Kiron Games is the name I use for the collection of games I have created since my first completed game 'Darker Skies' was completed in mid 2007.
All current versions of the games I create are free to use simply because none of them are published, and they are still in development, you can request a downloadable copy directly from me or visit the 'good old' Kiron games website.

The games I have created so far are as follows:

    Darker Skies -

First game I created, it's a tabletop RPG with a difference, players are the captain of a spaceship and have a crew, and later on a fleet to command. Players can travel between space stations and worlds acting on what lies around them the current version is 3.0 and is due for bug fixing and patches in the next few weeks (I'll keep you updated).
Darker skies has many kinds of game-play, including space combat, a trading and economy system, political structure that players can interact with, and the potential to be hired as an assassin (or become the target of one)  ground assault missions and your classic RPG, NPC dialogues, quests and dungeons. There are several factions which players can choose to join which offers them protection, a wage and access to faction equipment and star-ships, but restricts who they can and can't kill, trade with or have aboard their ship.
The races in Darker skies are very diverse, with 14 distinct species and a total of  42 sub-species!
If you are interested in playing Darker skies and you live in or around North Devon (England) then get in contact with me as I usually run weekly gaming sessions.

    Broken History -

When I'd finished DS(Darker Skies) 1.0 my creative juices were still flowing so riding the wave of imagination I decided to make another tabletop game.

Broken History is not essentially an RPG but more a battle strategy game with a few additional benefits for the veteran players, units that survive battles(battle ends and they have at least 50% of their original men left) gain experience which can add to their stats and make them stronger. The cost of soldiers is measured in Gold Pieces, at the start of a battle you are given a certain amount of gold pieces (depending on game type) with which to purchase an army, you can gain more gold pieces as you progress in the game by slaying enemy heroes, winning battles and completing secondary objectives during the battle, this gold can then be used in certain game types.
The size and skill of your army in most game modes depends on the additional gold you have personally accumulated, but when playing against newer players there is a gold 'cap' which prevents new players fighting armies that cost 4x the starting gold etc.
In campaign games all leftover gold from the starting gold in a battle (e.g. 500 gold, spent 480 on the army, 20 gold remaining) is carried along to the next battle.

    Darker Skies LARP -

Many of my friends are LARPers and I myself attend LARPS as much as I can. I was sitting around one day with my friend will and he said 'You could make a much better system' and so I started work on DS LARP that very evening, the aim was to:
    • Stay with the Darker skies universe including lore, weapons and magical abilities as much as possible.
    • Include the same racial benefits converted from d6s to physical actions.
    • Make the progression system more about the actions you perform rather than the number of times you have been to an event.
    • Make it fun for both people who are fond of combat, and those who are not
Version 1.0 is still under construction, and I'm planning play-tests soon.
I have managed to encompass many of the popular elements from the Darker skies tabletop with the exception of space based combat which was one of the main things I was aiming to achieve.
Player abilities are divided into three sections: Muscle, Magic and Tech.
this is to represent their aptitude on those three subjects and to represent their natural ability inherited from their species.
Players gain Ability points in these three schools by performing actions associated with that school, for example if a large boulder had trapped a native tribesman lifting the boulder to free the native would gain you muscle points, using magic to lift the boulder would gain you magic points and using a machine or explosives to deal with the boulder would earn you tech points, these points are decided by the referees and given to the players at the end of the event, unlike many systems there are no points for just 'turning up' so it encourages people to get more involved with the roleplay aspect and to perform actions more enthusiastically.

    Clasp LARP (The Warrior Spirit)

In the same year I created Darker Skies my mind was overflowing with good ideas, many of which I wrote down, one of them was for an action based MMORPG that allowed players previously unheard of freedoms to shape their characters and the world around them. I called this game Clasp - The Warrior Spirit, can't remember why but it does sound rather good.
After the success of Darker skies 1.0 and the development of Broken history, combined with the lack of programming knowledge I had back then Clasp was sadly given a back seat and forgotten about, until 2009 when I started work on the DS LARP, when going through my old notes for some information on the original explanations of magical spells I came across my scribblings of Clasp, the 6 deities, the 10 races and it made me want to continue the development.
After a few days of thinking I came the conclusion that for a single person to create, run and release a working MMO game of that complexity would take a lot more time and know how than I had to spare and so I used the ideas and created a new project, The Clasp LARP system.

    Small note:
If anyone would like to publish one of my games I'd be happy to make a deal with them however I would continue to develop my games and use them freely to my discretion, plus if you're making money out of it I'd love to get in on that action, would help towards the development of my ideas.
There will possibly be a cost to attend a DS or Clasp LARP to cover the cost of hiring the venue and purchasing the equipment. (after play-testing has been completed)
